North Korea says it has successfully tested a hydrogen bomb as a magnitude 5.1 earthquake was measured in the country near the site of an earlier nuclear weapons test, officials said Tuesday night. H-Bomb 5,000 Times Stronger than Hiroshima Blast Hydrogen bombs were developed around 60 years ago and use the fusion of hydrogen isotopes to create the rapid release of energy. It was not clear if the quake was caused by a Hydrogen Fusion Bomb test as North Korea has claimed or a conventional Fission Bomb test – nuclear fusion is much harder to achieve than nuclear fission:
